One thing that you could/could've done is bought 2 bolts that are similar thread and length to the stock tranny bolts around 9 and 3 o'clock on the bell housing. Cut off the hex head of the bolt and dremel a slot where that used to be to allow a flat head screwdriver to be used. This could be used as guides to get the trans perfectly lined up everytime. This was posted by some member here previously, never tried by me however. Since it's always a one man job with removal and install of my trans, I use two 2 ton jacks (one on the bell housing, and the other just behind the oil drain plug on the trans) to orchestrate leveling out the trans as best as I can by raising and lowering each jack, while pushing from the rear to close the gap.
